Anxiety over the world going back to normal
10/04/21

I'm sure I'm not the only one nervous about going back to 'normal' life. As someone who substitutes my music income with a job in a pub, I am particularly reluctant to reopen to a public who've been cooped up for so long (especially after the chaos of last summer). Before we go back to normal, there's a whole lot of crazy that some folks are going to get out of their systems and unfortunately hospitality and service, among other industries, will take the full brunt of this.
As a musician, I'm also hesitant about getting back to the way things were. Having not gigged or even played in a room with other people in well over a year, nerves about being heard by others are inevitable. However, this anxiety is hopefully outweighed by excitement and anticipation.
Just because we're anxious about the more self-centred members of society taking celebrations too far in the pub, or worried that our trade skills have declined after months of disuse doesn't mean we should let that fear fester and spoil what is hopefully going to be a busy, exciting and unforgettable summer. Rather than ruminating over the potential negatives, we should be anticipating the positives, looking forward to reuniting with friends and family, re-booting careers or branching out to new horizons.
Seek reassurance from friends or family if the thought of pubs, streets and stations being rammed with people again is making you apprehensive.
Whatever you'll be doing come June 21st I wish you a safe, happy and prosperous summer. Work hard, don't let your anxieties rule you and most importantly, have fun!
We've got this! -Will.
